Most stucco failures start with prep: an unsound substrate, an uncut control joint, a skipped flashing. It is the first line a cheap quote drops.

What goes under the finish before we call a wall done
A finished wall hides all five of these checks, so we do them before any finish coat goes on.
- SubstrateSound and dry before anything is fixed to it; a weak base fails under any finish.
- Control jointsCut where the wall moves, so a crack follows the joint instead of the face.
- Flashing and sillsAt windows, roof lines and junctions, so water is sent out before it reaches the wall.
- Drainage behind stoneA drained assembly behind veneer, flashed where stone meets stucco.
- Insulation, mesh and base coatOn EIFS: insulation board, embedded mesh and base coat, then the finish.
