How to Repair Stucco So the Patch Does Not Crack Again

A stucco repair holds when it rebuilds the wall's own layers in order: stop the water, cut back to solid stucco, replace the paper and lath, then apply three coats with the right waiting time between them.

The six layers a patch cuts through

Traditional stucco is three coats on lath. Every layer the damage reached has to be put back.

  1. SheathingIf it is soft or wet, it is replaced, never covered.
  2. Building paper, two layersThe moisture barrier, lapped so water runs out of the wall.
  3. Metal lathFitted tight to the old stucco edge and fastened with roofing nails that go 1 inch into the sheathing.
  4. Scratch coatSlung onto the lath with a trowel; it must hold on its own.
  5. Brown coatA smooth, even layer, misted with water while it cures.
  6. Finish coatTinted and textured to match the wall around it.

The repair in order, with the waiting times

Right column: what goes wrong when the step is skipped.

  1. Find where the water gets in

    Check window and door edges, sills, roof-to-wall joints and every vent or tap. A hollow sound when tapped marks loose stucco.

    The leak keeps soaking the wall behind a neat patch.

  2. Cut back to solid stucco

    Chisel out loose pieces until every edge is firmly bonded, without tearing the paper.

    A skim over loose stucco cracks on the same line within two winters.

  3. Dry and fix what is behind

    Wet sheathing dries first; rotted sheathing and torn paper are replaced.

    New stucco seals the moisture in.

  4. Paper, lath and mesh

    Two layers of paper, lath tight to the old edges, a diagonal mesh strip at window corners.

    Diagonal cracks return at the corners.

  5. Scratch coat

    Mist the old edges; mix only what you can apply in the working time, often 45 minutes for quick-set stucco.

    Wait at least 48 hours

    Edges that dry too fast pull away.

  6. Brown coat

    Trowel it smooth and keep it misted.

    Wait at least 7 days

    A finish over a green base coat crazes after one season.

  7. Finish and sealant

    Match the texture first (sand, swirl, knockdown or dash), then the colour. Renew sealant at joints and openings.

    The right colour on the wrong texture still shows from the street.

Waiting times: International Building Code 2512.6, cement plaster curing. In Ontario, cement coats are applied roughly April to November.

End the patch at a line, not in open wall

On a faded acrylic finish a lone patch always shows. We carry the finish to the nearest corner, groove or control joint, like the lines on this wall.

Stucco repair questions

What is the best filler for stucco cracks?
For anything wider than a hairline, the lasting repair is routing the crack, embedding fibreglass mesh in a base coat and finishing with a texture-matched coat. Never use silicone caulk on a crack you plan to finish over: it will not take a coating and has to be cut out first.
How soon should a stucco crack be repaired?
Before the first freeze. Water in a crack expands about nine percent when it freezes, so a hairline left in October is wider by April. Rust or dark stains below a crack mean water is already moving through the wall.
Can stucco be repaired in winter?
Not properly, because cement coats need moderate temperatures to cure. A winter fix should only keep water out, by sealing an open crack or covering a hole until spring.
