The four parts of a roof edge, and how each one fails
Downspout
Takes that water down and should empty it 4–6 ft away from the foundation.
Failing: water dumped at the wall, a wet strip at the base that never dries.
Soffit
Closes the underside of the overhang and lets air into the attic.
Failing: gaps, sagging panels, pest holes, an ice dam at the same spot every winter.
Fascia
The board along the roof edge that the eavestrough hangs from.
Failing: rot, peeling paint, a trough pulling away from the house.
Natural Resources Canada recommends that soffit vents make up about half of an attic’s ventilation (NRCan, Keeping the Heat In, chapter 5), so we size vented panels to the roof vents.

Seamless troughs, guards and downspouts
What are seamless eavestroughs?
Troughs formed on site from aluminum coil in one length per roofline run, so the only joints are at corners and outlets. Long back runs are where sectional troughs leak first, at their joints.
Do you install leaf guards?
Yes, in several grades. Guards cut cleaning sharply on most lots, but maple keys and pine needles still need an occasional clean-out, so we pick the grade after seeing your trees.
How far from the wall should a downspout empty?
Four to six feet from the foundation. A downspout that empties at the wall keeps the base of the stucco and its weep screed wet, and an extension often costs under $100.
Can you fix stucco stained by an old leaking trough?
Yes, as one job: we replace the failed trough first, then clean or refinish the stained wall below it. Refinishing the wall alone brings the stain back with the next overflow.
How often should the roofline be checked?
Twice a year. In spring, look for ice-dam damage and hangers pulled loose by snow; in fall, clear the leaves and confirm every run still drains to its downspout.
