Why the base coat sets the price

Sand float has grain that breaks up light, so a base coat that dips a few millimetres never shows. A smooth finish follows the coat under it exactly.

When the sun is low and skims along the wall, every hollow throws a shadow. A deep colour makes it worse. That is why the base is screeded flat and checked in raking light first. The finish material costs about the same as sand float.

Three walls where we advise against smooth

It has cracked before

Smooth shows a hairline crack along its full length. Fix why the wall moved, or choose a finish with texture.

One patch on a textured wall

It reads as a patch from the street. Texture can change on a full recoat of the whole wall.

A very dark colour over foam

Manufacturers set a minimum light reflectance for finishes over foam. We check yours before ordering.

Repairs later, and which finish goes on top

On a smooth wall the trowel marks run across the whole panel, so a small repair usually becomes a whole panel taken to the nearest corner, joint or band. We order colour for a complete elevation in one batch and keep the formula on file, so that panel is mixed from the same recipe.

Smooth also sheds rain and dirt faster than any textured finish.

Acrylic

Colour mixed through, cures flexible, the finish used on EIFS.

Cement

Cures hard, often painted for colour. Full comparison

Flat white faces split by corners and returns: each is a place a later repair can stop.

Smooth stucco questions

Does a smooth stucco finish cost more than sand float?

On a standard house it sits in the upper half of our $8 to $16 per square foot installed range. A smooth architectural finish with a flat base and approved sample panels runs $30 to $40 per square foot.

Will a smooth stucco wall crack?

Any stucco can get hairline cracks as a house moves. Smooth shows them along their full length, so we advise against it on a wall that has cracked before.

Can my existing textured stucco be made smooth?

Yes, on a full recoat of the whole wall, if the new system suits what is underneath.

When can a smooth finish be applied in Ontario?

From April to November. Base coat and finish need about 5°C or more to cure.
