What you can see on this Toronto exterior

Four details read straight from the photo, taken before the lot was graded.

  1. One smooth coat, two storeysA flat white finish runs from the brick base to the eaves with no banding, so any wave in the base coat would show.
  2. Black frames, white returnsDark window frames outline every return, which is why the stucco has to wrap each opening straight and square.
  3. Bay window under wrapThe small bay roof was still in housewrap while the walls below it were already finished.
  4. Brick base left exposedThe stucco stops on a straight line above the brick foundation course instead of running down to the soil.

The material costs the same; the difference is how flat the wall underneath must be and how repairs show later.

What a smooth exterior like this costs in Toronto

Smooth trowel lands in the upper half of the first band, because of the extra base-coat work.

Before you book a smooth stucco exterior in Toronto

Does re-stuccoing a Toronto house need a building permit?
The City of Toronto exempts re-cladding a house of three storeys or less with non-combustible material other than brick or stone veneer, which covers cement stucco. Foam-backed EIFS usually falls outside that exemption, and heritage properties need approval first. Source: toronto.ca.
Can a smooth finish go over my existing textured stucco?
Yes on a full recoat, if the new system suits what is underneath. The old texture is levelled with a new base coat first, and that levelling is where most of the extra cost goes.
Will hairline cracks show on a smooth wall?
More than on any other finish, because nothing breaks up the line. If your wall has cracked before, we say so on the visit before you choose smooth.
