The four details that decide whether trim leaks
On most houses we see with a leak at a window, the stucco field is fine and the trim detail is not.
Top of a band or sill
Drawn flat, so water and snow sit against the coating all winter.
Cut to the manufacturer's minimum slope, with a drip edge under each sill.
Surround at the frame
Finish pushed tight to the window, which cracks along that line within a season or two.
Stopped a joint width short, then backer rod and sealant, as on our caulking page.
Under the window
A new sill over an opening with no pan sends water into the wall below.
The sill pan goes in first, even when that means opening more of the wall.
Edges and corners
No mesh at the edge, so the foam chips when a ladder or shovel hits it.
Mesh embedded in base coat and carried over every edge and corner.
Trim on a house that is already standing
A good share of our trim work is on existing stucco, not new builds.
Adding surrounds to a plain wall
Possible without re-cladding, if the wall is sound. We test the finish for bond and moisture first: a surround on a coat that is letting go comes off with it.
How close a colour match getsChipped or dented trim
The damaged section is cut back to sound foam, rebuilt, re-meshed into the coat around it and refinished.
Stucco repairA stain or soft spot below a sill
That is water first. We find where it enters, usually the sill, the frame joint or a flat top, before anything is patched.

Window trim questions
What is stucco window trim made of?
On most houses we work on, it is a foam core shaped to the profile, fixed to the wall, wrapped in base coat and reinforcing mesh, and finished like the wall around it. Once the mesh at an edge breaks, the foam is exposed, so a chip needs a proper repair.
Should the trim go on before or after new windows?
After. The window and its sill pan go in first, then the head flashing, then the surround and sill are built around the opening with a sealant joint at the frame. The full order is in our guide to replacing windows on a stucco house.
Should the trim be the same colour as the wall?
Either works. A matching colour gives shadow lines only, and a contrast colour makes the trim the main feature. Both are integral-colour finishes, and we put up a sample before you commit.
When is trim installed?
April to November, the same season as every other coat on the house, because the base coat and finish on a profile cure the same way they do on the wall.
