The smallest piece of stucco on a house is the one I get called about most, and stucco porch column repair is not a smaller version of wall repair. It is a different job, for one reason: there is usually something inside a column that is holding your porch roof up, and the finish you are looking at is not it. Get that wrong and you spend a thousand dollars making a soft post look excellent.
I have been doing this in the GTA for over 25 years, and columns are where I see the widest gap between what a wall costs and what people expect a column to cost. They also produce the most confident wrong diagnoses — from homeowners, and from the crews who quote a porch from the driveway without touching it.
Why do stucco porch columns crack before the walls do?
Because a column is almost all edge and no field. Four narrow faces meet at four outside corners, it lands directly on a porch slab with no drainage clearance, it takes a near-flat joint at the top where it meets the beam, and it sits at exactly shovel, salt-bag and bicycle-handlebar height. The wall beside it has none of those problems.
Run the arithmetic and it stops being a mystery. A twelve-inch square column nine feet tall has around 36 square feet of surface — and 36 linear feet of outside corner, plus a termination top and bottom. A plain 36 square foot patch of wall has almost no corner at all. Everything that goes wrong in stucco goes wrong at edges, terminations and joints, and a column is nothing but edges, terminations and joints stacked into a small package.
Then add the weather. The porch roof edge drips right beside the column, and the slab it stands on throws that water straight back at the bottom foot. In January that water freezes in place, because a covered porch is the one part of your exterior that never gets sun on it. In March somebody puts down salt within arm's reach of the base. If you have read about keeping the bottom of a wall clear of grade, a column is that same problem with the clearance permanently set to zero.
What is actually inside a stucco column?
One of three things: a structural wood or steel post carrying the porch roof, a masonry pier built as part of the porch, or a hollow decorative wrap around nothing at all. Which one you have is the single fact that decides whether a crack at the base is cosmetic or urgent, and you can usually work it out from the driveway.

The trick is to look up, not down. Follow the column with your eye to the ceiling of the porch: if a beam runs across the top of it and the roof framing bears on that beam over the column, that column is structure. If the top of it dies into a flat soffit with nothing happening above, it is decoration. On a two-column front porch, both are almost always the same — but I have opened plenty of porches where a middle column was added later purely for symmetry and was carrying nothing.
The four places water gets into a column
Every column failure I have taken apart came in at one of four places, and they show up on the outside in four different ways. None of them start as a stucco problem — they start as a detailing problem that the stucco later gets blamed for.

The one that surprises people is the bottom, because it looks like the most solid part of the column. Here is the thing a wall does that a column usually does not: a wall drains. Water that gets behind the finish runs down the weather barrier and leaves at the weep screed. A wrapped column normally has no weep at the bottom, because the bottom is buried in the slab detail. So water that gets in has nowhere to go. It fills the bottom of the wrap and sits there against the post, all winter, in the dark.
That is why a column can look perfect at eye level and be finished at the ankles.
How do I know if the post inside is rotted?
You cannot be certain without opening it, but four checks from the ground will tell you whether to worry. Knuckle-tap the bottom foot and listen for a hollow, drummy note. Look for a dark band at the base that stays after everything else has dried. Look at the head joint in low evening light. And look for rust bleeding out anywhere near the slab.
Take each one honestly. A drummy bottom foot means the finish has debonded from what is behind it, which means water has already been in there through at least one freeze. A dark band that stays is not a stain, it is moisture content — the wall beside it dried and this did not, and the reason it did not is that it cannot. A head joint that reopens tells you the porch and the house are moving relative to each other, which is normal; what is not normal is filling that joint with rigid material every year and expecting a different result. Rust bleed at the base means metal is wet in there: a post base, an anchor, a base plate, or lath that is now steel wool.
Then there are the signs that stop being about stucco altogether. If the porch roof edge has developed a sag, if the column is visibly out of plumb, if a gap has opened at the top that was not there last year, or if the porch ceiling has started to open up — those are load symptoms, not finish symptoms. The right call there is a carpenter or an engineer before a plasterer, and any stucco contractor who quotes you a re-wrap on a column doing that is either not looking or hoping you are not.
None of this tells you the condition of the wood. Only opening it does. That is why the first line on my quote for a suspect column is opening the base — not because I am padding the job, but because everything after that line depends on what is in there. This is the same logic as reading water damage on a wall: the outside tells you where to look, not what you will find.
What does stucco porch column repair cost in the GTA?
Column work is priced by detail, not by area. A single column with a sound post typically runs about $1,000 to $2,800 all in: roughly $120 to $400 to open and assess the base, $450 to $1,200 for the base detail and metal, and $450 to $1,200 to rebuild the wrap and match the existing finish. Rot in the post or beam moves it into carpentry-led territory.
Now the part people find annoying, and they are right to. Our published residential rate is $8 to $16 per square foot installed, and a column is 30 to 40 square feet. Multiply it out and you get $240 to $640, which is not a real number for this work, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. That per-square-foot rate is a whole-wall rate. It assumes long uninterrupted runs where a crew sets up once and covers hundreds of feet a day. A column is the opposite: full mobilisation, protection of a finished porch floor, cutting back, a structural inspection, a base detail, four corners, and a finish that has to match a wall that has been weathering for fifteen years. Two honest notes on that number. First, two columns do not cost twice one column — the setup, the protection and the mixing are shared, so the second one is meaningfully cheaper than the first, and it is almost always worth doing both while we are there. Second, if the rot has travelled into the beam or the porch framing, you are in the $1,500 to $5,000 band and the stucco is the small half of that bill. Nobody enjoys hearing that. It is still cheaper than the version where you wait two more winters.
Patch, re-wrap, or rebuild the base?
There are four realistic conditions and four honest answers. The mistake is applying the first answer to the third condition, which is exactly what a cheap quote does, because filling and painting a base is twenty minutes and looks fantastic on the day.

Whatever the wrap is made of, the detail that decides how long the repair lasts is the bottom. The finish should not die into wet concrete. On a wall that means a weep screed and clearance — six inches over soil, two over paving, and I add two more over the published minimum because a GTA yard fills in. On a column the space is not there, so it has to be bought deliberately: terminate the finish clear of the slab with a proper edge, or a metal base, so the bottom foot has a chance to dry between wettings.
And please, do not let anyone skim-coat a drummy base. Patching over debonded material seals the water in rather than out, and it comes back within a season or two, wider than before and now with a patch line through it. That is the whole business model of the $99 patch-and-pray crew: the repair outlives the invoice by exactly one winter.
Foam column wraps are a different animal
A lot of newer GTA porches use EIFS shapes — foam column wraps, sometimes with a moulded base and cap. They look sharp, they go up fast, and they make curved and tapered forms that would be miserable to build in cement. I install them. But they change two things you should know about before you buy one.
First, impact. Fifty to a hundred millimetres of foam under a thin coat has essentially no resistance at kick height. A snow shovel corner, a bike pedal or a delivery dolly leaves a dent, and a dent in a thin coat over foam becomes a crack, and a crack at the bottom of a column is a funnel. Second, mounting: foam holds nothing. A rail bracket or a light screwed into a foam wrap is fixed to air, which is the same lesson as drilling into a stucco wall — the fixing has to reach the structure behind, and the hole has to be sealed back there rather than on the surface.
None of that makes foam a bad choice. It makes the bottom foot and the fixings the two things to specify properly rather than leave to the day.
What the City thinks a column is
This one is worth knowing before you talk to anybody. The City of Toronto's decks and porches permit guide asks a porch permit application to show the sizes and locations of all columns, the sizes, locations and spans of all beams, and footing details including size, depth and frost protection.
Read that list again. That is not how anyone describes trim. The City sees your column as a structural member standing on a footing that has to get below frost. Refinishing the wrap is not permit work and never has been. Replacing the post, changing what it bears on, or rebuilding the porch structure underneath is a different conversation, and that page is where it starts. It is also a free second opinion on the thing you are about to close a finish over.
Four sentences to put in the quote
Column work sits in a gap between trades — the carpenter's work is inside, the finish is mine, and nobody's default scope contains the handover. These four lines close it, and they cost nothing to add before the work starts.

That last line matters more than it looks. A column is the one repair where the scope genuinely cannot be fixed in advance, so the honest way to handle it is a written change order rather than a padded quote — the same way it works on the rest of a job, which is set out in how a stucco payment schedule should run.
The short version
A stucco porch column is not a small wall. It is a structural post with a finish wrapped around it, standing on a slab, with no drainage at the bottom and a moving joint at the top, in the one spot on your house that never sees sun. It fails first because it was always going to. What decides your bill is not the crack you are looking at, it is the condition of the post behind it — and the only way to know that is to open the base, which is why that is the first line on the quote rather than an afterthought.
